چکیده

Estimation of the underwater attenuation of light is important to ecosystem modellers, who require information on Photosynthetically Available Radiation ( PAR ), and on the euphotic depth for calculation of primary production. Characterisation of these processes can be achieved by determining the diffuse attenuation coefficient of PAR , KPAR . A review of bio-optical models of the spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance, d K , is presented and stresses the necessity for a better knowledge and parameterization of these coefficients. In the second part of this work, radiative transfer simulations were carried out to model 1% dZ K the spectral diffuse attenuation of downwelling irradiance averaged over the euphotic depth 1% Z (depth where the downwelling irradiance is 1% of its surface value). This model takes into account the effects of varying sun zenith angle and cloud cover and needs absorption and backscattering coefficients (the inherent optical properties, IOPs) as input. It provides average and maximum relative errors of 1% and 5% respectively, for sun zenith angles [0°-50°] and of 1.7% and 12% respectively at higher sun zenith angles. A relationship was established between 1% dZ K at a single wavelength (590nm) and KPAR at 1% PAR Z (where PAR is 1% of its value at the surface) which allows for a direct expression of 1% ZPAR KPAR in terms of inherent optical properties, sun angle and cloudiness. This model provides estimates of KPAR within 25% (respectively 40%) relative errors respectively with a mean relative error less than 7% (respectively 9%) for sun zenith angles ranging from 0° to 50° (respectively higher than 50°). A similar method is applied to derive a model for the diffuse attenuation of photosynthetically usable radiation, 1% ZPUR KPUR , with similar performance.

Variability of the downwelling diffuse attenuation coefficient with consideration of inelastic scattering.

In situ time-series measurements of spectral diffuse downwelling irradiance from the Bermuda Testbed Mooring are presented. Averaged diffuse attenuation coefficients of downwelling irradiance, Kd,and their elastic and inelastic components are investigated at seven wavelengths. At shorter wavelengths (<510 nm), Kd is weakly dependent on the solar zenith angle owing to the prevailing scattering e...

A model for the diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance

[1] The diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance (Kd) is an important parameter for ocean studies. For the vast ocean the only feasible means to get fine-scale measurements of Kd is by ocean color remote sensing. At present, values of Kd from remote sensing are estimated using empirical algorithms. Such an approach is insufficient to provide an understanding regarding the vari...

Evaluation of downwelling diffuse attenuation coefficient algorithms in the Red Sea

Despite the importance of the optical properties such as the downwelling diffuse attenuation coefficient for characterizing the upper water column, until recently no in situ optical measurements were published for the Red Sea. Kirby et al. used observations from the Coastal Zone Color Scanner to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of the diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd(490)) i...

AOPs Are Not Additive: On the Biogeo-Optical Modeling of the Diffuse Attenuation Coefficient

Commonly we see the diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance (Kd) expressed as a sum of the contributions of various constituents. We show here that, both theoretically and numerically, because Kd is an apparent optical property (AOP), this approach is not consistent with radiative transfer. We further advocate the application of models of Kd developed in past decades that are ...
